A ContestĪccording to 1 Kings 18:17–20, Ahab accused Elijah of having caused Israel’s troubles, most likely because it had not rained in nearly three years. Read 1 Kings 18:17–18, looking for what Ahab claimed Elijah had done. As recorded in 1 Kings 18:1–16, Elijah sent Obadiah to tell King Ahab that Elijah wanted to meet with him. Jezebel killed many of the Lord’s prophets, but Elijah survived. Consequently, Elijah used the sealing power to bring a drought upon the land. Remember that according to 1 Kings 16–17, Ahab, his wife Jezebel, and most of the people in the Northern Kingdom of Israel chose wickedness and worshipped false gods. Elijah and King AhabĪs you study 1 Kings 18, look for principles that can guide you when situations arise in which you must choose whether to follow the Lord and His prophets or the world. Now, what if one line represented the ways of the Lord and the other represented false gods and the ways of the world? It would not take long before you would have to choose which direction to follow. What would happen if you tried to walk in opposite directions at the same time? ![]() Pray together and thank God for friends and ask Him to help you stand alone and not be afraid.Imagine being the person in this diagram. Consider ways that you could give a friend a blessing. Think about a time that your child received comfort or a blessing from a friend. Point out the comfort that Elijah received from Elisha. Whenever you or your child is afraid, recite the verse together. Pick out a verse such as Psalm 56:3 or I John 4:4 and memorize it. Point out that God spoke to Elijah to comfort him and that we can find comfort by reading the Bible. Explain that even adults get scared sometimes. Take about times when you and your child were afraid. Also, demonstrate trying to light a piece of wet newspaper and show how great God’s power was to light a wet offering on fire. If you wish, you can use a safe place to demonstrate lighting a piece of dry paper. Point out that even though they were stronger in number, God is infinitely stronger. You can demonstrate the vast difference in numbers by using pennies, buttons or other items to show your child how many more prophets there were for Baal. Think about how brave Elijah was to stand up to the 450 false prophets of Baal. Talk about how, just like today, people didn’t always want to listen to what God had to say. Remind your child that the widow didn’t have much, but she trusted God with the little she had. Explain how God did another miracle to provide for Elijah, the widow, and her son because their ingredients never run out. ![]() Ask them what happens to the other contains? They become empty. Ask your child to help you pour the ingredients into a bowl for mixing. Beforehand, measure out all the ingredients you need to make a loaf of bread. Explain that they only had food left for one more meal. Share how later God took Elijah to a widow and her son. Point out that you are feeding them, and it was a miracle for the ravens to bring food to Elijah instead of eating it themselves. You can take the child to a petting zoo or park and feed ducks or geese, or feed a pet at home. God told Elijah to leave that place and that He would look after him near a stream.Īsk the child if they have ever been hungry. Explain how God told Elijah to tell King Ahab there would be no more rain for some time. Explain that before people had a whole Bible to read, a prophet was tasked with bringing God’s word to the people.
